Slide guitar, harmonica, African blues guitar stylings and soul vocals all feature in the fresh and vibrant roots sound of Robin Auld. An award winning artist with an international CV spanning twenty albums, he is a powerful and accomplished performer either solo acoustic or with an electric trio.

Born in Lusaka, Zambia to Scots parents, Robin's childhood was spent alternating between Southern Africa and Scotland; a journey reflected in the African and Celtic influences in his music. He learned to play the guitar by listening to Hendrix, Ry Cooder and Neil Young, also absorbing influences from the various guitarists of Southern Africa to make the contemporary mix of his music today.

He had several hits in South Africa with producer Kevin Shirley, who has worked with Led Zeppelin and Joe Bonnamassa amongst others, before embarking on the journey to take his music abroad. He has performed and recorded in New York, London, Glasgow and Nashville, opening for and performing with acts such as Lloyd Cole, Osibisa, Michelle Shocked, Jackson Brown, Seasick Steve and Mud Morganfield.

His latest album, "Fingers in my Pocket", recorded in London, is a collection of roots and blues songs... Robin describes it as being a "walkin', credit card, institutional failure, mean women and a sore head" kind of album. African influences are never far away though, with a reggae song and even a Cape goema tune to pepper the mix!

The Shadow of Brel is award-winning musician, composer, actor, director and singer Johnson's solo show of the Belgian master's greatest works, from the classics to some of the lesser known songs. The music of Brel is emotional. It's sadness delivered with humour, love interwoven with pain, the pathos of yearning and loss, and Godfrey Johnson sings and plays them with the sensitivity and passion they deserve. If you don't know the music of Jacques Brel, this is a wonderful way to get acquainted. If you are familiar with Brel's songs, but have never heard Godfrey Johnson, then you are in for a treat as Johnson brings his special touch to the arrangements and his gift for interpretation to the songs.

Armed with only a piano, his mischievous fingers, a resonating voice and dry humour, Johnson lets completely loose, blending humour and heartbreak. His dazzling musical repartee reveals the range and skill that has earned him a devoted following.

In 2007 Johnson shared the Fleur du Cap award with Claire Watling for Best Performance in a Cabaret for 'Kissed by Brel'. He was nominated again in 2009 for his performance in 'Flirting with Coward'.

Pascal's of Napier
in celebration
of their
1st Birthday,
is proud to present the dynamic duo:
Elizabeth Frandsen & Rika Vermeulen
in the acclaimed Cabaret

SURVIVOR: Woman
An intimate look at love

19 March 2011 @ 19h00

SURVIVOR: Woman - What the crits say:
"Last night Elizabeth Frandsen and Rika Vermeulen treated the audience to a show filled with such artistry that I am still on another planet. Survivor: Woman features songs by Brel, Lloyd Webber, Schonberg, Andre Strydom and Kander & Ebb, among others, and it's themed around love. But that's not the surprise - it's the sincerity and effortless quality that really makes the show stand out. Elizabeth Frandsen's voice is a thing of luminescent beauty - from the subtlest pianissimos to the most hair-raising, gutteral belting notes, she takes her audience through an enormous range of emotions with a beguiling freshness and consummate artistry.

Rika Vermeulen's piano accompanies her with such style and sometimes (like in Brel's Song of the Old Lovers) so hauntingly that you can feel the hair on the back of your neck rising. It's world-class stuff. I believe that anyone who breathes and loves and feels should see this show. See it when it plays at a theatre near you. Or far from you, for that matter."

Willie Fritz Writer/Designer
www.williefritz.co.za

"Frandsen has a beautiful rich voice with a dynamic range from whisper-soft to a full warm blooded richness of tone. With that, she gives everything when singing. Her delivery is not only in her impressive interpretation and facial expression, but also in her body language and her hands that dance their own languid ballet. Her diction was excellent…"
Pieter Kooi - Die Burger 14 Februarie 2010

" ... (her) ability to mesmerise with her eyes and body language goes much further than being voluptuous. She enchants with her frivolity and perfect timing."
Die Burger 2 Februarie 2010

Rika Vermeulen

SURVIVOR: Woman - The Show:
From new, young love, excited and dreamy, to unions, break-ups and survival of love, this show takes the audience on an unexpected emotive ride.

Elizabeth Frandsen and Rika Vermeulen are proud and strong, but not afraid to show vulnerability in this healing production.

How would songs like "Maybe this Time", "I dreamed a Dream" and "Song of the Old Lovers" come together in an chronological sequence of women in love?

Using well known songs and putting them in a different context, with a very new take on their interpretation, these two women tell a story that every woman and man of all ages can relate to. By including new and old compositions by their favourite composers, these women succeed in bringing a new luminosity to an age old story.

Both women, each a maestro on their own, come together as equals in an interactive way, which makes for interesting and inventive cabaret. No longer does the singer just sing, or the pianist just play. These two women act, sing and play together to tell their story.

After taking the audience tenderly through the ups and downs of love, the show ends with a blazing anthem as tribute to all survivors, whatever their quest might have been.

It will do your heart good.

Pre-booking and payment essential.
Date: 19 March 2011

Classic to Cabaret

Saturday 11 September 2010
R140 per person
(includes a 2 course meal)

Booking essential as limited seating available.

Be seated by 7 pm for dinner.
Show starts around 8.30 pm.

Niel Rademan en Rika Vermeulen

This performance is a charming mixture between classical, popular and authentic cabaret music.

Niël can be defined as a real "performance beast". As a public figure and an artist in his own right, he performs at some of the biggest art-festivals in South Africa.

Accompaniment by Rika Vermeulen, a very experienced accompanist and pianist in her own right, who does not keep traditionally quiet at the piano, but becomes actively involved in the show.

This pair has so much fun on stage it becomes contagious. With a lot of humour, and a sprinkle of sadness, they move audiences' hearts and minds in the style of the classical cabarets of Germany, France and the Netherlands. Together they form a splendid duo!

Niël's album, Fisantekraal wil be available @ R100.00
